Although it has been over a decade since HP first introduced the HP Deskjet 1220c, the printer offers some features that are not found in many newer models. Originally designed for use in businesses the wide format printer is an excellent choice for printing ledger sheets as well as banners up to 13″x50″.
Print Speeds
The print speed of the HP Deskjet printer 1220c is rated at 11 ppm in black and 9.5 ppm in color. While not up to the standards of the speed of laser jets produced today, the inkjet technology offers a less expensive up front option and is ideal for many home users or smaller businesses that might have difficulty affording a laser printer. Businesses that do need to produce large numbers of prints may find that the laserjet printer is a better match for their needs.
Photo Printing
The HP 1220c Deskjet truly shines when printing photos on photo paper. In the photo mode, prints are made at 2400×1200 dpi. Since the HP Deskjet 1220c can be networked using an external print server, every computer in the office can have the option of printing high quality photos.
Platforms
The HP Deskjet 1220c is equipped to work on either Windows or Macintosh platform directly from the box. Connections to the computer or network are made possible through a USB connection as well as a parallel port. All connections to the printer are wired. HP Deskjet 1220c drivers are easy to install making setup of the printer a breeze.
Paper Sizes and Types
The Deskjet 1220c HP accepts paper as small as a post card or as large as the 13″ x 50″ banner. It prints on plain paper as well as photo paper. Transparencies, labels and other special inkjet media work as well. Firms that use AutoCad and other drafting programs will find that the machine can handle all but their biggest prints. A duplexer unit allows for easy preparation of two sided prints. The alternate straight paper path accommodates papers up to 67-pound thicknesses. In addition, the printer will accept many sizes of envelopes.
Paper Capacity
The paper tray for the HP Deskjet 1220c is designed to accommodate 150 sheets through the autoload tray. In addition, paper can be fed through an alternative port that is ideal for heavy duty cardstock and greeting cards.
Print Cartridges
The print cartridges for this machine are the HP45 and the HP78. Both of these high capacity cartridges print over 900 pages, but they are somewhat more expensive than the lower yield cartridges used with most other machines. The HP78 is a tri-color cartridge making replacement easier than some of the machines that use four or more separate colors.
Print Quality
Many reviewers rave about the quality of prints produced on photo paper and graphics on plain paper offer an excellent quality. On coated paper, the graphics tend to lose detail and feature a rough color gradient. Unfortunately, text from the machine is mediocre on most media.
Built For Business
HP advertises the machine as being built for business. At 5000 sheets per month the HP Deskjet 1220c is rated with a heavier duty cycle than most other inkjet machines. The machine allows for automatic enlargements and reductions of documents to fit the paper size. Posters can be printed up to five times their original size.
The HP Deskjet 1220c is a printer that offers excellent quality for both graphics and photos. Operation of the machine is fairly quiet and it looks good when setting on the desktop. Unfortunately, the text quality is not quite up to par for today. The price makes it affordable for many businesses and the overall output is good enough that it will be a hit with many users. HP Deskjet 1220c ink is readily available online and in most stores.
